I’m listening to Willie and sending love via pen and paper…

Author: gina

Hello our dear OneLove family, If this was a twitter it would say “I’m listening to Willie and sending love via pen and paper.” There is no cable or hook up in the new apartment yet so I can’t access anything but my cell phone and CD’s. It has been exactly 10 months since Dai went into the ER, SICU, emergency brain surgery, and started this journey through coma to coming back. The Doctors were offering little hope and the only thing to cling to was that God might not want to take him yet. So we prayed. And then came all of you. The band management wanted to do a press release and I asked them to ask people not to send flowers. Just send prayers please. In the days following there were messages from all around the globe that you would and were praying for him. God bless you all. We know that God hears our prayers and answers them. You will never know how much your messages and faith have held us together when every crisis came. You prayed us through all of them. In mid January the health insurance company decided that Dai was not making any progress and so denied any further payments to the excellent Rehab hospital that he was in. That is when Gina entered our lives. By the time the hospital told us that he could no longer stay there a month later, Gina was launching her OneLoveForChi to help cover his medical expenses. She has devoted her time and energy and now has created a worldwide family of brothers, sisters, and friends. We are so connected and together, having shared smiles and joys, tears and grief. This has become so much more than a website. It is a huge movement of love and sharing and always caring. Bonds have been formed that will never be broken. Marco rests and Matt is home with his wife and son. Our families continue to pray for each other.

Back to Dai. He was scheduled to come home this week, but had another episode so we have rescheduled for next week.

Mae and I got a UHaul last Sunday, help loading boxes, equipment, the Oxygen Chamber and moved me into a handicap accessible apartment one or two minutes from Mae’s house. This week has been unpacking and organizing for me and trains for Mae to go back and forth between Dai days and her family some nights.
I’ve spent a good deal of the past few days crying and praying, begging God to let his coming home make the difference. I pray that being out of the hospital, using the chamber and having more good stimulation will improve him greatly. As always, I know that you all will be lifting him in prayer, which is the most important thing.
One of the biggest problems and what the insurance company used to send denials since January is that, while Dai would speak occasionally to Mae or me or someone else he loved, he didn’t do it in front of the Doctors. Even if he was being alert and responsive, if a nurse walked in to draw blood, he would close his eyes, tighten his jaw and clench his fists. They continued to chart a lack of response.

Then today Mae gave me the Drs review notes from August 25,09. I couldn’t stop shouting “Yes!” “Finally!” And “Thank you Father”

The Doctors notes read “The patient did wake up when I walked into the room and he appeared to be tracking me.”
“Again, patient appears to be tracking me, does open eyes on command. The patient appears to be able to wiggle his toes at time on command.”
Under assessment she wrote “minimally conscious state. The patient appears to be more conscious each week.”

Praise God!! Those words are the ones that may get the insurance company to pay for the advanced Physical Therapy that he has been denied in the hospital. Until then, thanks to all of you who have donated, we will get him the help at home. Thank you all for making this happen! There have been so many kindnesses shown, so much comfort offered and love given. Thank you all for standing by him all this time! You never wavered. There aren’t words to express our gratitude. May all of your goodness be returned to you when you need it.

So the mountain man comes home soon. Please continue to pray for him and Mae, who will be here with us daily, working with him and caring for him. With OneLove and such Respect, Mom J and the Cheng Gang

PS: Gina told me today that she saw the stats on patients misdiagnosed as being in a Vegetative state. More than 40 percent with that diagnosis are not in a vegetative state. We have been telling the Doctors for the past 6 months that Dai was not vegetative or in a coma, but that he was sometimes conscious, alert and responsive to us and his surroundings. It took a Doctor seeing him regularly for months to correct that diagnosis to “minimally conscious.” Thank you Dr Pradeepa!

Good news! It’s such a shame doctors didn’t recognized Chi’s real state earlier. I’m glad that Chi will be “home” soon though. Keep on sending prayers! Much Love.

This is the greatest thing I’ve heard all day! I only hope that things continue to turn around. Our plans for our benefit show are moving along well and every band we’re starting to work with has been very excited about the prospect of sending our love and support to Chi through our music. Thank you Jesus!! Absolute music to my ears! Chi can only go forward from here. I was out the other night with my hubby and I swear there was a guy at the restaurant that reminded me so much of Chi.

I couldn’t stop staring at him! Maybe it was a sign now with this good news. I think about Chi every day and prayer for the day he fully recovers.

I know it’s been a long road but the power of the human spirit prevails in Chi and he is always in my heart!

Much love to Chi, Jeanne, Mae, the Cheng family and sweet Gina.

Theres only one way forward now for Chi and thats getting better.

Praying for Chi every minuet of the day.

  21. fyreniyce says:

    Momma J, Mae & family
I have been down your road myself and trulu believe the best possible thing that could happen would to have Chi at home. It is now surprise that Chi would close his eyes when the doctors came in the room, when you really think about it. Hospitals are one of the most dangerous places in the world to be. With him at home, you can control the environment, you can’t really do that in the hospital. It is not going to be easy, but with all this love out here, I truly believe he will get better. Continued prayers and much love, Stephanie

  22. eddepp says:

  24. defthe1s says:

Thanks Gina, Thanks God, thanks to everyone involved in Chi’s caring.

    God bless you all!
And let’s keep praying! It’s happening!
