Message From Yosh…

chi chengHello,

I have been putting this off for a while now… unsure what to say I guess? My name is Josh (Cheng given name Yosh)… I spent allot of time with the Cheng family… I have memory’s with every single one of them from Lan to Minger…. Ive fallen off the roof of the house to built them greenhouses…haha I will save all my story’s for another time…. I want to talk about Dai-Machine right now. I met Dai one day when he came to work for my Dad’s construction company and he would install the H’D's so the houses wouldn’t blow away….. He would always show up at like 10am and leave early always saying i’m in a band this and in a band that….. Well one day he walked over to my Cd collection and realized we had similar interest’s in music.. So he kind of took me under his wing to “educate me” on the music “Scene”…After some lengthy conversations we agreed I needed to see his band Deftones at the cattleclub in sac…. I wasn’t sure what to expect but when they hit the stage my world changed that day….. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing… They were unbelievable… Those of you who got a chance to see them at the cattle club blowing the roof off the joint know what I’m talking about…..

So here I am in the audience realizing this Laborer for my Dad is something special… I feel good… but to top it all off.. Immediately after they get done playing Dai runs off stage to the merch table and grabs me a shirt and says “what did you think”…. I still laugh as I think about it… I played it cool and was like “It was ok—I’ll see you tomorrow at work”

From then on we developed a cool friendship where we started to work together and dai was always trippin on the fact that my Dad was a pastor and I was always looking for trouble… So he was always instigating things…. Drinking Brown Cows first thing in the morning…..smoking in the big white van at lunch….. We were a match made in heaven… All good things must come to an end though… One day Mavrick came calling and Dai gave up his construction career. We lost touch and saw each other at good and bad times……

I know deep inside Dai is a fighter and friend. I also know what a great man he is. Dai Machine I love you and get well soon… I know this little speed bumb is just that…A bump in your life that will only make you better and stronger”….You have affected my life…not by being a rockstar but by being yourself… God’s not through with you yet…I know this…

See you soon
Yosh

  3. Hey Josh,
Great blog. I’ve heard your name a bajillion times but don’t think we’ve ever met. Chi talked about you all the time.
When Chi started working that job, I giggled to myself because I just couldn’t imagine him doing construction. I asked him what he did all day and he attempted to explain it to me… but I still have not idea what an H’D is or how you install one. I do however have some fond memories of he and I lacing up our boots in the morning (his work boots, mine doc’s) and chitchatting about our plans for the day before heading out to work and school.
Thanks to you and your dad… we made rent every month.
Thanks for sharing your stories… and you are right… he is a fighter… and I’ll add to that, stubborn as heck! He’ll get through this.

    • Pauline,
I did actually meet you…. On earth day way back when Dai and I started having some beers after work and He told me to go up to his apartment with him… So we got there and I think we made potato’s with ranch dressing and watched something goofy on T’V with you….Long story short…I was really drunk and Dai took off for practice and I passed out in my car….Thanks Dai for that one!

  4. hi Josh. so good to hear from you!Pls ask Zion and Jason’s church to keep Dai and us too in prayer. I miss the days when Wan would walk thru the back door with Dustin n Jason, both with guitars hanging off them, both tracking mud all thru the house. GOOD TIMES!!Hope life is being good to you all. love to the parents.I love you all n think of u often. Please tell jeff n sharon that they are always a part of our familly! They are the best! I’ll never forget how far your father will go for a dollar. “hey Jeff, could you go up to Ft Bragg n marry Dai and Adrienne?” Sure he would! Oh Ya-I forgot. We probably forgot to pay him. But that didn’t stop him from the next time.”Hey Jeff, could you n the family drive to Idaho to marry Wan and Julie?” Of course they would. ……Mae just called from the hospital. Great news. I have to call Gina so she can blog it. LOVE LOVE LOVE YOU ALL! Jeanne

    • Much Love Mama Cheng!!! You were such an awesome 2nd Mom to me…. You have a wonderful family and I enjoyed my times with them all….. Maybe to much at times!
      Josh

  5. Okay Josh… I have a vague recollection of that. If it is the day I think it is… I had been at UC Davis that day for the Earth Day festival where I’d hung with some of the old band members of FMK and was sort of out of it by the time I got home. I think you guys were there when I got home. And yes… there was always something goofy on the tv. I sure miss those days.
But what kind of a jerk was I to not let you crash at our pad? Do I have a vague recollection of trying to talk out of your car and into the house or am I imagining things?

This is my favorite Chi Story yet. It is amazing how many people…far & close…strangers & friends….Chi has touched. Your story … the realness of it …shows how great a person Chi is, rockstar or not. God Bless you and God Bless Chi and his family.
