sleep you can catch up on…

deftones, chi chenghey folks, i know how long overdue this is and i want to apologize for that. please know that myself and mom and the family are so grateful to everyone out there that has never lost thought or forgotten about dai. it is still a strong source of strength helping us get through this in every sense, mentally, emotionally and financially. we could not have done this alone, that is for sure.

dai is doing great being home. i will be honest, we were apprehensive about bringing him home, not because we didn’t want him home, but because we are not doctors or nurses and we were not sure if we could take care of him if something happened. but obviously love is a powerful medicine, because it is working. 24 hours a day, he is with his family and being stimulated so much more than he had been in the hospital. little things, like taking him for a walk everyday, even just getting him in a chair for most of the day, to keeping music playing that he wants to hear, movies he wants to watch, doing his physical therapy, giving him new things to taste. i am so happy to be able to say that i can see a difference and improvement. it is still a slow recovery and seeing him when he was in the hospital made it seem even slower to me. but now he spends most of the day awake, noisy as hell. he is expressing himself, which shows me that he is here, right with me. i haven’t lost him. if there is anything that makes him uncomfortable, he lets us know and the best part is that we are there with him to take care of it. we have the “visiting angels” on daytime shift now. after the first bill came for 24 hour shifts, i thought it wouldn’t be long before i might have to sell a liver or something to keep them on. the girls we have are wonderful and very attentive to dai. mom and i take turns at night with him. we don’t get a lot of sleep, not because he is having trouble, but you kinda lie there on high alert, so it’s not really sleep, but i’m not complaining. sleep you can catch up on.

dr. nguyen and the staff are taking excellent care of him. i am so grateful to him for taking dai on and being there if we need him. he has had two visits now and at the last one, the dr. said dai seems to be doing much better… after only 3 weeks. so a special thanks to him, especially for the news i got yesterday from the office. dai has been accepted to uc davis medical center for an evaluation. this may not seem like a huge deal, but it is. you have to send a request just to be seen. even though dai had been in the hospital for the last 4 months, there was never a time when it was about waking him up or making him better. it was more like tending a garden. going to uc davis will be about what can we do for him. which is what he has needed this whole time. they will call me to make the appointment and i will definitely keep you all updated on that.

his bone flap is healing wonderfully. he had one episode since he got home, one of the first nights, and has not had one since. excuse me while i go look for wood to knock on. we have started cutting back the medications that he was on to treat the episodes, which were necessary, but the downside was that they knocked his ass out. supercoma is what i called it. even just cutting back a little and he was up all day. how was he ever going to wake up if he was sedated all the time?

on a personal note, it is been the best thing to have him and mom living, literally, 36 seconds from my house. i am able to be a mom again and take care of dai without feeling like i had to make a choice between the two. i am still finding the right balance, but things are so much better, no longer a gypsy, having to either miss my babies or my brother.

mom is doing a phenomenal job with dai. she is the one that is there with him, 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week. she is truly an angel on earth and i feel like heaven should just lay itself out before her. i see where dai gets it.

that’s about all i can think of right now. thanks for reading and keeping us in your thoughts. it won’t be so long next time.

much love and respect,
mae

p.s. – i just got off the phone with mae and she also wanted to add that chi will be starting oxygen therapy soon – now that he is stable and has been without any episodes.

one love for chi,
gina

  3. So greAt to hear! Thank you for the update we know with the care he is getting the positives are endless, which will help at least myself rest better knowing this. I am curious on what music chi has been enjoying at home ? Care to share?

  4. Thanks for the update. Always good to hear about his progress.

  5. You are all doing a phenomenal job. I’m proud of you. That probably sounds strange, but I know what it is like to care for someone who is partially locked inside themselves. When I first heard about Dai I thought I would be able to give helpful advice but I see that is totally unnecessary. Your entire family, all the Love and dedication, blows me away and makes me….yeah, somehow proud.

His and his family’s strength is not only inspiring, but astonishing. You all are amazing, and not only is Chi grateful for you, but all of his fans are as well. Seriously. God bless.

  21. Hi. I’m just a portuguese fan of Deftones saying all the best for Chi and hoping he recovers fully soon. I can say for sure that it’s my dream to listen to a new Deftones album with Chi on basses… Now, as for his recovery, don’t mind me saying this, but did you ever thought of seeing him recovering in some specialized cuban hospital? I’ve heard they do miracles there concerning traumatic (accident) patients. Just a thought.

Regards and greetings from Portugal for Chi and his family!

    Hi there,
I am a big fan of Deftones and I was shoked when I knowed about the crash. I must confess that initially I feared the worst. I have followed the recovery of chi through this blog and I want to thank you for having so much work to keep informed those who care about the Chi, although not knowing him personally.I am taking care of my grandfather who is sick too, so I know what it costs the everyday, seeing loved ones suffer. But I have much hope that Chi will rock a lot to us … he is young, full of strength, and has a lot of people who loves him to channel their good vibes to him.
Portugal is wishing the total recovery of Chi, here many of us pray for him.
    Excuse my lowsy English.
Hang on there…tomorrow will be a better day.

Dear Mae, Momma J & Gina
OMG UC @ DAVIS!!!!!!!! That’s almost as good as news as the hyperbarics!!! I DO GET IT!!!! Chi is so lucky and I know that you all feel blessed as well to have the opportunity to care for him!!!I am hoping the Padre Pio rosary made it home with Chi, we continue to pray for you all here in Pennsylvania!! Anxious to hear about the chamber and the results!!! Slow and steady, much love and hugs, Stephanie

This is great news! As a coma survivor (mine was only 7 days, a blip compared to Chi’s), it brings me great joy to hear Chi is doing well. The Deftones’s music have done so much for me, personally, in getting through the confusion of it all and coming to grips with what happened to me.

It’s all like a dream for Chi now, as it was for me. I’m a law student writing a paper, but I wanted to take five minutes to show my joy for your family.

  25. GOOD MORNING BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. all the blessings from Peru

  27. Much love on behalf of the entire Montreal fan-base. :)

Tell Chi to seek solace in the wisdom of the Stoics. Your own attitude is ALWAYS under your control.

  28. Hi Gina,
Thanks so much for keeping the fans up to date with Chi’s progress and finding the time to do so. I can’t imagine what you and your family are going through right now, it’s amazing how love can be one of the strongest forces on earth yet it seems to be taken for granted almost everyday. Sending Chi, you and your awesome family lots and lots of strength, positive vibes and love from Sydney, Australia. May all the positive energy directed at Chi make for a full recovery.
