The man who actively promoted chillout to the masses was DJ Jose Padilla. He was a great mixer and experimenter. His hours-long sets included reggae, trance, lounge, and chillout. He conducted his electronic sound experiments at the legendary Cafe del Mar. His chillout (music) is still popular today among fans of unhurried, relaxing beats. Many representatives of trance culture use chillout to dilute their tracks.

The most popular artists are Tunguska E.M.S., Café del Mar, Chicane, Andre Tanneberger, and many other DJs. With the new millennium, trance and lounge culture seeped into the expanses of our homeland as well. A lot of progessive performers started to work in this style. Today there is a radio wave “Record Chillout” with the program with the same name, broadcasting on Sunday nights. The host is Artem Dmitriev, an erudite young actor with a velvet voice and a great knowledge of the history of electronic music.

The Spanish bar Cafe del Mar was the birthplace of this light style, and today it’s a kind of Mecca for lovers of relaxation and gurus of modern chillout. Every year it attracts famous performers, DJs play their sets and make visitors chill out to the fullest extent. Ministry of Sound, London’s club, became the setting for a new wave of relaxing electronic music. Subsequently this club began to organize grand chillout festivals in Ibiza. Every year the chillout program is included in the festivals taking place in Goa.

Chillout, or rather, its first steps on the planet began back in the nineteenth century. Initially they were only experimental sketches and samples of such famous composers as Claude Debussy and Eric Satie. The two musical innovators were friends and one-thinkers, and they diluted their loose views and academic compositions with various variations. Tonal, relaxing music has become one of the calling cards of these musicians.

In the twentieth century, the chillout style became a separate trend. It was often identified with the lounge, by and large these two trends are synonymous. As a rule, calm, relaxing melody sounded in bars and restaurants that promoted Retro, Futuristic Ambience. The club movement had not yet imbibed this style, although a new round in the development of this style was not far off.

In the 1990s, a new musical style begins its rebirth, it bears the old name of chillout. It becomes not just a musical style, but a kind of way of life and thinking. The creator of the renewed chillout is called music critic, producer and radio host Chris Koko. His works formed the basis for the formation of the new trend. They were characterized by an unhurried rhythm, quiet vocals, electric notes, and a constantly repeating main melody.

Nowadays this style exists in two forms – original and electronic. Original chillout is instrumental music dominated by guitar and keyboards and is extremely rare. Electronic chillout – a soft melody without a pronounced beat. The main part sounds unobtrusive and long. The main feature is the fragments of phrases, the effects of a broken record, the sounds of old movies. In a narrow sense, a chillout is an area to relax in a nightclub or on a dance floor. Some large parties equip special lounge areas, which play calm music with low speed and muffled soul. Under it there is no desire to dance, you want to relax.

Chillout is a style of electronic music whose name comes from an English slang word meaning “relaxation”.

Originating in the early 1990s, then-chillout was relatively seasoned and slow. During this time, several seminal albums were released with the prefix “Chill Out” in the title. These albums were also closely associated with styles of downtempo, trip-hop, slow versions of house music, nu jazz, Cybient and lounge. This musical style has also been influenced by trance, ambient, and creative dance music (IDM) styles. The term “chill-out” is mostly used to describe tonal, “relaxed” music, or at least not as intense as in the above-mentioned predecessors. It is incorrect to refer to chill-out as various kinds of hypnotic rhythms. Sometimes the name “soft-techno” is used instead of chill-out.

Recently, chill-out has become popular among progressive trance and progressive house musicians, making their creativity more diverse. That’s why this genre is sometimes called Ibiza Trance/Balearic House – after the island of Ibiza as well as Goa trance after the state of Goa, India. This music reflects the atmosphere of the island of Ibiza, and, as fans of the genre say, listening to this euphoric and spiritually uplifting music, you can vividly imagine a Mediterranean sunset. This effect is achieved through the use of synthesized string instrument sounds, wave sounds, mandolins and guitars, as well as “whispered” vocals.

Chill-out is also called a separate dance floor at big enough concerts (parties) in Goa-trance style and its derivatives, or just a recreation zone in dance clubs. In the chill-out usually plays relaxing music of the above-mentioned styles, dancers on the main dance floor come there to relax. The largest psi events are also equipped with a special “dark” dance floor, where they play dark psytrance – a kind of the opposite of the chill-out.

How to listen to Chillout?

Many people listen to relaxing music. But few people guess about the real pleasure you can get from listening to these songs.

Chillout is not just slow music. What matters here is not how hit and cool the track is, but more the setting and conditions in which the music is listened to. Without these conditions, you may not understand the tracks you are listening to at all.

So, how to listen to Chillout correctly:

  1. Choose quality music.
Take some time to think about what kind of chill you like. It can be either calm, light and summery compositions in the café del mar style, or floating, atmospheric, already close to ambient, with an absent rhythm. Or do you like meditative Tibetan music? Just choose from your favorite tracks that you like to listen to.
  2. Chillout should be listened only at night, before going to sleep.
The fact that our body has certain biorhythms, and at different times of the day it feels different. At night there is an inhibition of all processes. At this time we are more relaxed. You have to listen to relaxing music when you are relaxed. Nothing will work during the day.
  3. Do not be distracted by anything.
To feel the depth and grace of this music, to immerse yourself in it with all your consciousness, you need to concentrate on it. So, put aside all the fun and business, and give music all your attention.
  4. Be sure the light is dimmed / turned off.
Light causes excitement and wakefulness. I don’t think we need to explain.
  5. Alone.
You must be alone. When listening together, it is impossible to listen to a song completely, because your tactful friend\friend will always not be able to stand it, and will start talking while listening. So, before you listen, make sure you’re alone, turn off your phone and other audio alerts so you’re not disturbed. Close your windows and doors. Feel the emptiness around you. You are ready.
  6. Chillout should be listened to with your eyes closed.
This is very important. When our eyes are closed, we concentrate more on sounds, i.e. we switch our attention to auditory perception. For the same reason, blind people’s hearing and other systems become more acute.
This condition doesn’t just add to enjoyment. Closing your eyes will take you on a journey along with the composition. It is like a guide, it will take you where you need to go and tell you what you need to know. Don’t neglect it.
  7. Chillout should be listened to with good acoustics.
Like, however, all music. If you don’t have a good system, it is desirable to have at least the bass, so you can feel the depth and atmosphere of the composition. So if you think about listening on the built-in speakers of the laptop – make yourself a slap. It will help you come to your senses.
  8. Chillout should be listened to in a relaxed state.
Don’t think that if it’s a chillout, it will relax you anyway. This music only complements your state and makes your relaxation even more enjoyable. Don’t walk around the room, and especially don’t stand. You can sit, or better yet, lie down on something soft. Leave everything you have to do. Put aside the problems/runs/fun – it’s all just going to get in the way. Think about something good, easy. For example, imagine your village, a meadow with grazing cows, birds singing from the woods nearby and a little audible sound of the wind, which gently caresses the grass and beautiful yellow-purple flowers.

Following these simple rules will make listening to music an exquisite pleasure. You will begin to understand the music, what emotions it conveys, what the author wanted to tell a particular track. That approach will make you more aesthetic. You will begin to notice other beautiful things around you. It’s a small step toward learning to enjoy not only everyday life, but everything in life.

Enjoy the rest of your life.
